For prisons to become beacons of a multicultural society rooted in human rights principles, and to be able to fully engage with civil society, they need to fulfil some fundamental tasks. This task is a serious concern for many agencies both nationally and internationally. Prisoners and staff know what behaviours and language are acceptable. Staff are aware of and respond appropriately to race and cultural issues. Implicitly, when a student is extracted from the classroom, the more likely that student is to drop out of school as a result of being in class less. Staff promote and model inclusion in all aspects of their work and show an awareness of equality, anticipating and addressing the needs of prisoners. Care plans are kept up to date and, where appropriate, are multidisciplinary. Chaplains are able to provide support to prisoners who have experienced bereavement or loss. Particularly, in a situation where one group of individuals prison staff have a huge amount of power over another group the prisonersit is fundamental to have a solid ethical framework within which prison staff can maintain boundaries and avoid moving into an inhumane treatment of prisoners.
